Possible Storylines

Having decided today roughly the groups we will have for the animation project the next step is to come up with a good storyline. The main criteria is that it should have a main character (that is preferably none human), but with possibly human characteristics, as well as a crisis and a solution.

The one idea I had is based on one of my favourite childhood stories, 'The Hungry Caterpillar'. The story begins with an egg on a leaf, which then hatches into a caterpillar (main character). The caterpillar becomes very hungry and goes off in search of food. On each day it devours a different piece of fruit, eating more and more each day of the week. On Saturday he eats a lot of junk food and becomes really overly full and ends up with a stomach ache and doesn't feel well (the crisis). By Sunday he begins to feel better, but he has become very fat and so builds himself a cocoon. The end of the book see's the caterpillar emerge from the cocoon having been transformed into a butterfly (solution).

I think this storyline could work well, being simplistic enough to not encounter any major issues in the animation, but with enough artistic license to experiment with different ideas. From a sound point of view some interesting sounds could be created, particularly in relation to the caterpillars environment. It would also be beneficial as much of the sound work could be commenced prior to the completion of the animation (such as the eating noises, caterpillar movements and the environmental sounds).

The one idea I also have in my head for the caterpillar design is the mildly psychedelic scene from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland which features a caterpillar sat on a toadstool in a woodland.

Welcome

So i've created this blog to keep up-to-date with my progress in the Digital Media Studio Project at Edinburgh Uni with notes on ideas and progress.

I've signed up for the project 'Animated Shorts' in the role of Sound Designer, and the information on this project can be seen here
